New data collection strives to be more comprehensive with gender. Imagine a disaster causing one to hang on to a few possessions as they wander the streets. Imagine a woman leaving an abusive situation with nowhere to turn, her baby on her back. Then there's the transgender woman pushed away by family and not accepted by strangers. How are they counted? It is real. How will you help?
In catastrophic times like a pandemic or a hurricane, weeks or days can mean the difference between housing and homelessness. Local and state emergency management plans often fail to meet the needs of people who are homeless. What will you do to help?
African Americans make up thirteen percent of the general population; but more than 40 percent of the homeless population. People who identify as two or more races make up a disproportionate share of the homeless population. Hispanics make up a share of the homeless population approximately equal to their share of the general population, while Whites and Asians are significantly underrepresented.
